Yesterday (18/9/7) I found all of my inbox folders had disappeared. The rest of OE was OK. I followed the MS procedure (File-Import-Messages-MS Outlook Express 6-Import mail-Location of Messages (which was in C drive as a GUID number) and I received the following "No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open.
Then I located an individual (missing) folder, which was a .dbx file. I could not open this file. Advice in this site says that if you find a file, it will be .bak, but all I can find are .dbx.
Can anyone advise? |

This got me in the right direction. Except mine were in C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name here)\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities
Then because I have multiple email addresses I had several files that look like this
{CEC9FD04-B26F-4CAD-9184-2A9GBB45698BA}
Click on the file, then click on
Microsoft
then Outlook Express
then there were a bunch of dbx files.
Sent items, inbox etc.
What I did was copy these files to my new pc in the same location as on the old computer and bam! there they are. |

I found .dbx files in 2 different places, but in the 1st case they match folder names, not individual emails. Where can I find individual emails?
At D:\outlook message store, all the dbx files I see are the folders I created.
In the location below I found the following files:
folders.dbx, drafts.dbx, inbox.dbx, sent items.dbx, etc:

Hey! I managed to be able to see email message files without being logged on as the person whose emails I was trying see. This was important because I was trying to restore the message files from my old computer which used a different user name.
What I did was to go into OE and change my email message store location to the location I wanted to recover from. When I did that, I was able to see the additional folders and files. I then moved them manually to my current location and informed OE I wanted to switch back to that location. It was necessary for me to close/open OE at times to pick up the change.
To change the message store location go to Tools ==> Options ==> Maintenance and click on the "Store Folder" button. |

Thanks for all the thoughts. I have XP media version, can't unhide the identities folder no matter what I try, and I've tried all the tricks stated here.
The GUID folders are showing, but nothing underneath them is showing up, and it is really frustrating.
Anybody got any other ideas?? |

In Outlook Express right click on Inbox, select Properties, this will give you the path to inbox.dbx, for instance: C:\Documents and Settings\Your name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{*******-*****-****-****-************}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx. | ACETEK ... thank you for writing. I've been searching for a week for a way to work with my .dbx folders. Have Windows XP, had already set hidden folders to visible, still couldn't access .dbx folders in Explorer. Did as you suggested, changed properties for Local Settings, and it worked. This worked. THANKS for mentioning this. |

| I just did same thing.. tracked down location of Outlook Express (.dbx) files on my new WIN XP machine so I could copy over the large ones on my Windows 2000 PC. I could not see the entire path until I went into Win Explorer and in TOOLS- FOLDER OPTIONS- VIEW and changed it to let me see system files. Then you can see the full path that shows up when you serach for *.dbx files. |

| This information is accurate for Win 98 (and earlier?) but not for Win XP, which has the files/folders indicated but for some %$*&ing reason does not display them, even when you check/uncheck all the "display hidden items" options. Any further info on XP would be most welcome! |

Directions were very clear and easy to follow, but when I got there, there was no "there" there.
Once i found the v. long unique identifier number, there were no sub-directories or files underneath it. |
