We have a lot of firsts this year for E3, one of them being a true full fledged invite from MS to join them at their pre-show conference in the LACC this year. I have to say, the setup was pretty amazing looking to say the least, the greetings being a simple phrase of "Jump In" with green lighting all around.
I got in early to the seating area and took a close spot to the front row, good times were going on for the first part, MS was airing various viral shorts with people trying to cite off what random gaming terms meant, the RPG one was probably the greatest clip, RPS = RPG, that woman will be remembered in internet history for quite some time. My hat goes off to the team for actually providing enough film clips to last the duration of the wait, although it would have been nice to see an equal ratio of adults and kids, or at least gamers and kids. I'm not sure if it was a targeted thing to find people who couldn't even get melee but if it was bravo to them since it seemed authentic that they had no idea what they were saying.
The presentation started up shortly after, Don Mattrick appears on stage to a musical introduction with some basic news the first being the blockbuster franchises to hit the console over the past year, of course Rock Band and Guitar Hero III were on the top of the list, the list also included titles for everyone which decided to pick out UNO as one of the top games for all. The overview was pretty simple that they're trying to be a contender for all ages with a library already deep in foundation and a solid selling platform for developers given their install base.
First up after the opening was the Fallout 3 trailer, although it wasn't the whole clip they were planning to debut online later. Still it showed that the game was taking a fun light hearted approach to a brutal game. The sequence takes the gamer to the full onslaught of destruction that has occured outside. Todd Howard at this point comes in to take everyone through a brief playthrough of the game, citing that they've learned a lot about the hardware and large expanse gaming in general from their previous use development on Oblivion.
The gameplay is pretty fluid, some parts seem to slow down but it's still coming around as a port so I'd expect the speed issues to be accounted for later in polishing. Right now the model damage is awesome, the demo targets a random suspect and then blows off a limb, shortly after there's a grenade attack leveling some more of the AI. The weapons demo carries out from there with some rocket fire, a nuke catapult and more. Certainly it was a quite a show, we'll have a lot more on Fallout 3 later on Tuesday when we sit down with Bethesda and do a mini interview for more info as well including some details about what gamers might expect for exclusive content on the PC and Xbox 360.
